Flying in, moving around and getting to the venue: What you need to know about mobility.
Mobility
Costa Rica operates two international airports. Most international flights will take you to San José Juan Santamaria Airport, from where it takes around 5 hours by car to our venue. The closest international airport to our venue is Liberia in Guanacaste, roughly a 3 hour drive. As of July 2022, there are still some cheap flight options available, but since February is the high travel season in Costa Rica, prices are expected to go up towards the end of the year.
Moving around
By car: San José offers a variety of car rental services. It is advisable to reserve a car beforehand, e.g., via one of the common search engines for rental cars, such as billiger-mietwagen.de or check24.de. In our experience, you do not get better conditions in Costa Rica, so we recommend to rent your car beforehand with the option of free cancelation. Make sure that the car disposes of air conditioning, not only for the heat but also for the dusty roads - open windows can be quite annoying. Other than that, the features of your car depend on your ideas of your trip. If you want to take the road least traveled, a four wheel drive is a good idea. Also, remote accommodations or small or steep roads might be accessible by four wheel drive only or might require high clearance of the car. However, since it will be the dry season, most places in Costa Rica - including our venue - are accessible via regular car.
By bus: If you wish to travel by public transport, Costa Rica has a good coverage of comfortable, climatized long distance buses. Getting to smaller places might be restricted or requires continuing by smaller local buses, taking more time. But it is definitely possible and a great way to get to know the country! If you plan to travel by bus, this brochure from the Costa Rican tourism agency will be helpful. Also, this website on bus connections might help: yoviajocr.com. Short distances
Uber is very common in the Gran Area Metropolitana (San José, Heredia, and Alajuela) and constitutes a safe and cheaper alternative to taxis. It might also be available in some other touristic parts of the country, though there is no guarantee to catch one. Otherwise, official taxis are red with a yellow triangle. The short distance bus system in San José can be a bit confusing, if you are up for it, this website might help: yoviajocr.com
Getting to the venue
Coming from San José, to get to the venue, you have two options:
Option 1 is less driving, but involves taking a trip on a (car) ferry: From San José, go to Puntarenas and take the ferry to Playa Naranjo (buy your tickets online beforehand). Once in Playa Naranjo, take the 21 north towards Jicaral and always stay on the road which becomes a dirt road, the 162, at some point.
Option 2 leads you around the Nicoya gulf by car: From San José, go towards Puntarenas, but take the highway 1 north at El Roble and the highway 18 west. Cross the north part of the gulf via the Puente de la Amistad and follow the road until the crossing towards Nicoya (to the right) or San Pablo (to the left). Take a left and always follow the road. At the next crossing, take a right on the 162, a dirt road.
The last part of the road will be a dirt road which will possibly pass through a couple of little creek ditches, more of a trickle, really, nothing to worry.
When you get to San Francisco de Coyote, take a right after the gas station, passing by Mini super Rey. Follow the road and after 5km, you can take a left to Playa Coyote, the neighboring beach from Playa San Miguel (see section on Playa San Miguel area). To get to the venue, keep straight at the intersection and take the next to the left, taking you to Playa San Miguel. At the beach front, take a right and drive to the end of the road. PietraMare will be on your left.
A note on directions: In Costa Rica, you do not use exact addresses (street names or house numbers). Rather, orientation is given in reference to important landmarks (e.g., 300 meters south of the church, etc.), or nowadays with GPS-coordinates. So the easiest way to get to the location is with google maps or the popular Costa Rican navigation app waze (link to ios, link to google play). Internet coverage on the way to our location is not always great, so make sure to load directions beforehand or use an offline map. Wifi will be available at the venue.
