North Caribbean coast

North Caribbean coast

The North Caribbean coast with Tortuguero as its main point of attraction is often called the amazon of Costa Rica. There are no streets here, Tortuguero can only be reached by air or – most recommended – by traveling through the mangrove swamp lands by boat. The trip there and back makes much of the charm and is an experience in itself. Tortuguero is especially popular during the egg-laying season for turtle watching, but also worth visiting year round for animal watching and tours (e.g., by kayak) on the canals. You do not come here for the beach, but for wildlife watching in the national park as well as a relaxed car-free vibe in the friendly town of Tortuguero, offering excellent Caribbean food- more spicy and coconut-based than in the rest of the country. Don’t miss a meal of “rice and beans”. For guided tours, Barbara Hartung can be recommended.
